Sunoco’s five refineries make up the Refining & Supply Business Unit. These five refineries are located in Philadelphia, PA • Marcus Hook, PA • Westville, NJ • Toledo, OH • and Tulsa, OK.

What does an Operator do at our refinery facilities?
Operators are responsible for monitoring plant utilities (water, steam, electric, fuel gas & condensate), as well as inspection, control & start-up/shut-down of unit equipment.

  • Operators work shift work based upon a twelve-hour rotating shift.
  • Refinery operations run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

How do I become an Operator?
Sunoco typically recruits for Operators every other year in order to fill its pool of applicants. When openings for operators occur, Sunoco will post notice of the openings in the local area papers. Our process requires applicants to call into an automated telephone system. The automated system will ask you a series of questions to determine whether you meet the qualifications for the position. If you pass the initial pre-screening, you will be prompted to schedule yourself for a testing session.

Once you successfully complete testing:

  1. You will be added to our Operator Candidate Pool, which is used to fill openings at our various Sunoco facilities.
  2. Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware area residents are considered for the following areas: Philadelphia, PA, Marcus Hook, PA, Westville, NJ, and Frankford Chemical Plant in Philadelphia.
  3. Toledo area residents are considered for the Toledo Refinery.
  4. Tulsa area residents are considered for the Tulsa Refinery.

As openings occur, Operators will be randomly selected from the pool of candidates to fill vacancies. Selected candidates that accept Sunoco’s offer of employment, will have to satisfactorily complete the pre-employment processes which include:

  1. pre-employment physical (includes drug screening)
  2. background screen

Sunoco’s “Operator Candidate Pools” are kept until they are either exhausted, or for a period of approximately 12-18 months.

How do I become a Maintenance Mechanic, Electrician or Instrument Technician?
Sunoco hires First Class Maintenance workers (i.e.- Boilermakers, Pipe Fitters, Welders, Carpenters, Garage Mechanics, Squad Mechanics, Machinists, Electricians, Instrument Technicians, etc.) to fill these type of job openings.

Notice of openings is posted in local area newspapers. To apply for these positions, all qualified applicants must visit Sunoco’s online Career Center and submit an application and/or resume for consideration.

Selected applicants will be contacted and scheduled for testing. Applicants that pass the initial testing may be interviewed, as well as be requested to perform a skills demonstration.

What positions require a Chemical Engineering degree?
If you have a degree in Chemical Engineering, you may want to look at positions in our Technical and Operations Departments. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Technical Service Engineer
  • Process Design Engineer
  • Process Control Engineer
  • Operating Technical Specialist

What positions require a Mechanical Engineering degree?
If you have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, you may want to look at positions in our Reliability and Maintenance Departments. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Rotating Equipment Engineer
  • Reliability Engineer
  • Corrosion Engineer
  • Project Engineer

What positions require an Electrical Engineering degree?
If you have a degree in Electrical Engineering, you may want to look at positions in our Reliability and Maintenance Departments. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Electrical Reliability Engineer
  • Instrument Reliability Engineer
  • Analyzer Reliability Engineer
  • Project Engineer
