Gasoline Facts & Tips

How do I ensure that my vehicle is maintained properly?

  • Your owner’s manual is the first place to check for required vehicle maintenance. This is not only important for vehicle reliability, but safety of the driver and others in the vehicle may be at risk if scheduled maintenance is not followed. Furthermore, your vehicle warranty may be contingent upon following the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.
  • Get accustomed to doing a “walk around” inspection of your vehicle before you get in it and drive away. Pay particular attention to tires. Tires that are excessively worn or improperly inflated not only waste fuel, but can be a safety hazard.

What are some good tips on handling gasoline?

  • Most gasolines will last several months in a sealed, clean container – including your vehicle’s fuel tank.
  • If you think the gasoline will be sitting unused for more than a few months, add stabilizer to the fuel as soon as you buy it.
  • If storing fuel in a gas can, keep the container in a dry place away from direct sunlight. It is also best not to expose the container to temperature extremes.
  • Minimize the amount of gasoline you store for more than a few months. Fresh gasoline is still the best gasoline.
  • Other than adding fuel stabilizer as needed, refrain from adding other chemicals and additives to your fuel. Most engine manufacturers do not advise adding anything other than gasoline to a gas tank.

Why is Sunoco gasoline different from other brands of gasoline?

  • Sunoco gasolines significantly exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gasoline detergency standards.
  • In addition to government-mandated detergency tests, Sunoco gasolines are subject to additional and extensive testing by an independent, third-party lab to further ensure their quality.
  • Sunoco gasolines contain other additives such as corrosion inhibitors, metal deactivators, and antioxidants, which help to ensure that gasoline quality remains the same after we produce it at our refineries. They also promote a longer “shelf life”, which means the gasoline will last longer in between uses.
  • Dispensers at Sunoco gas stations filter and trap particles as small as 10 microns from the gasoline before it gets into your tank.
  • Sunoco gasolines meet every car manufacturer's specifications for oxygenated and reformulated fuels in areas where those fuels are required by law.
  • Sunoco gasolines do not contain methanol.
  • In compliance with federal law and as stipulated by most automobile manufacturers, Sunoco gasolines contain no more than 10% ethanol.
  • Sunoco gasolines do not contain MMT, a manganese-based fuel additive banned by the EPA in certain types of fuels.
